The National Medical Commission has taken a big decision regarding fees in private deemed institutions related to medical. The NMC says that the fees for 50 percent seats should be equal to that of government medical colleges.

National Medical Commission (NMC)

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued guidelines that the fees for 50% seats in private medical colleges and deemed universities should be at par with the fees in government medical colleges in the state.

The office memorandum issued by the NMC said. The benefit of this fee would be earlier to those candidates who have availed government quota seats, but limited to 50% of the total sanctioned strength of the medical college concerned.

The state regulatory authority decides the fee

If the government quota seats are less than 50% of the total sanctioned seats then the remaining candidates purely on merit basis will get the benefit of fee equal to the government medical college fees.

At present, the fees for merit seats in private medical colleges are decided by the state regulatory authority. However, after the implementation of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019,

NMC has made it mandatory to frame guidelines for fixation of fees and other fees in respect of 50% seats in private medical institutions as well as deemed universities.

No institute should charge capitation fee

The NMC said that no institution shall charge capitation fees in any form or manner. For fixation of fees for MBBS or PG courses, it needs to be ensured that the principle of “not for profit” education is strictly adhered to.

Though the government is yet to issue the official gazette notification regarding the office memorandum.

Therefore, it is necessary that all the operating costs and other expenses for the operation and maintenance of the institute for imparting medical education on permanent basis are included in the fees No excessive expenditure and excessive profit component should be allowed to be added.

The NMC said that this decision has been taken after extensive deliberations. Earlier, an expert committee constituted by the NMC had recommended a total of 26 comprehensive guidelines for fixing fees in private medical colleges and deemed-to-be universities.

These recommendations were uploaded on its website in May last year, inviting public comments.
