SC on NEET PG Vacant Seats:

The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition seeking an additional round of counseling to fill up 1,456 vacant seats in NEET PG. The vacation bench said the nine rounds of counseling have already been concluded and fresh rounds cannot be allowed as it may increase the chances of delay in the academic session.

Justice MR Shah said, “The petitioners are seeking counseling for the vacant seats, which are mostly non-clinical seats. There is no repetition that the center has to follow the time table to complete the admission.” Eight to nine rounds of counseling were conducted and still, some non-clinical seats are vacant.

Thus, non-filling of seats does not indicate arbitrary stand of the Central Government. In any case, The quality of medical education cannot be compromised, which affects public health.”

The court said, “Out of 40,000 seats, only 1,456 seats are vacant. Considering all these, the petitioners should not expect any relief from the court. The public health will be affected by the consideration of this petition.”

During the hearing, the Center told the Supreme Court that most of the vacant seats are in the fields of anatomy, biology etc. which are research and teaching fields which have no prospect of working as a doctor. Perhaps this is the reason why students do not choose these fields.

Supreme Court reprimands MCC and Central Government

The Supreme Court on Wednesday pulled up the Central Government and the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) for leaving more than 1400 seats vacant in the super specialty course of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Post Graduate (NEET PG).

The bench was hearing a plea seeking to order an additional round of counseling for NEET PG super specialty courses. The court said that even after the additional round held in May, 1,456 seats are vacant.

A bench of Justices Aniruddha Bose and MR Shah said, “If you add seats in the middle of the process, it automatically increases the chances of corruption in admissions,” the counsel for the Center said, adding that the reasons for the vacant seats were More than 140 seats are also to be added at a later date.

Justice MR Shah said that the inefficiency in the system is adding to the stress level of the students. Along with this, MR Shah has also asked the MCC and the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) to give immediate clarification on this.
